January 1st Brings NFPA 1 to MA

The new Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code, 527 CMR 1.00, will go into effect on January 1, 2015. This new code adopts, in part, the National Fire Protection Association’s Model Fire Code, NFPA-1, 2012 Edition, with amendments specific to MA. This new code will stipulate more stringent chemical safety process regulations.

More oversight to the chemical processing industry and open lines of communication are two of the goals behind the implementation of 527 CMR 1. In August of 2014, The Board of Fire Prevention Regulations voted to replace local regulations with the NFPA 1 (2012) national regulation and MA specific amendments. The implementation of this code will stipulate numerous requirements across a broad spectrum of chemical safety topics. Everyone will notice one change – allowing hold-open clips at self-service gas stations!

I hope everyone is enjoying a very happy and safe holiday season!
