When walking around your facility, be sure to check for compliance with ceiling clearance requirements. Most people are aware that storage of materials within 24 inches of the ceiling and 18 inches of a sprinkler is not permitted. However, these requirements are very easy to forget when space is limited.
The Massachusetts Comprehensive Fire Safety Code, 527 CMR 1.00, stipulates the restriction of storage within two feet of the ceiling and 18 inches of a sprinkler. OSHA’s regulation for automatic sprinkler systems, 29 CFR 1910.159, also stipulates a requirement to have 18 inches of clearance between sprinklers and material stored below.
