Services | EHS Design Consideration for Laboratory Relocation and Expansions

Many of our clients are making decisions about expansion or relocation. We are calling to your attention the value that Safety Partners can add when you include our Consulting Safety Officers (CSOs) as part of your construction planning team.

Since 1992, Safety Partners CSOs have provided input at construction team meetings for expansion and relocation projects, working directly with the team engineers, architects, general contractors and client staff. As well as our core safety knowledge base, Safety Partners has qualifications specific to building design:

  • Several CSOs recently attended the 40 hour class, Guidelines for Lab Design: Health and Safety Considerations, Harvard School of Public Health.
  • Others have attended sessions at EPA's Labs 21 meetings, where "green" design considerations are part of all discussions.
  • In addition, Safety Partners is a member of IFMA (International Facilities Management Association) and active in IFMA's subgroup for R&D facilities.

Although architects and general contractors are needed for the fundamentals of building design, they often lack an understanding of the real feel and function of a laboratory from the standpoint of safety & compliance, facilities/operations and lab management. We feel confident that a few hours of our time integrated into the planning of your new facility can provide valuable input on issues such as efficient function, safety, scientific process, and communication. We bring to the table information that is often overlooked or misunderstood. You will realize numerous cost savings:

  • fewer change orders;
  • less disruption in the development process;
  • and a new lab that will allow efficient operation and easier compliance with federal, state and local regulations.

By including Safety Partners in your planning meetings, you will allow for regulatory, safety and environmentally friendly features to be integrated into the initial design, when they are part of the construction costs. If these same features need to be added on or fixed at a later date - often necessitating tearing down walls or adding ventilation or plumbing when utility chases are already full - the subsequent work will be much more costly, in terms of time, labor and materials.

Should the opportunity arise, we hope you will consider including your CSO's input into the design of your new space as an extension of the valued safety services already provided to you. As a safety service organization, we feel that this type of partnership will also enhance the well-being of all client staff, by helping build safer, greener buildings, where staff spend so much of their time.

Whether you have already arrived at the stage of identifying a new office space or are simply considering future laboratory expansion, please feel free to contact me – or your on-site Safety Partners CSO – at any time to discuss your needs. We look forward to hearing from you.

Very truly yours,

Denise Aronson
President
