Consulting Safety Officer and Support Personnel

Part-time position with flexible hours; work as few as 5 hours per week or up to 40 hours per week

Consulting Safety Officers (CSOs) develop, implement, and manage detailed safety programs and systems that cover the areas of biological, chemical, and radioactive materials, as well as emergency preparedness, ergonomics, and animal care. A CSO is responsible for implementing all aspects of the client's safety program, including:

  • Completing applications for hazardous materials permits and licenses, including renewals and amendments
  • Managing regulatory communications and government inspections
  • Conducting job safety analyses and specifying recommendations
  • Writing customized manuals
  • Specifying the procurement, use, and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Developing and running training tailored for each client
  • Staying abreast of OSHA, DPH, DEP, EPA, NIH, MWRA, RCRA, and DOT requirements and regulations
  • Chairing client's safety committee
  • Conducting accident investigations and safety inspections/audits
  • Maintaining detailed and current, central, hard-copy and electronic safety files for every client

The CSO will take a very hands-on approach, working at client premises, and will do as little or as much as necessary from a safety perspective.

Requirements:

It is not necessary for candidates to be experts in all of the responsibilities and requirements of the CSO position. The best candidates will have laboratory and/or regulatory experience, as well as experience in the items listed below. We will train the right person, as long as they are willing to learn quickly.

  • Minimum 4+ years of professional health and safety or laboratory experience
  • B.S. in related field
  • Detail oriented, highly motivated, resourceful
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Ability to travel within the Boston area
