Consulting Safety Officer (CSO)

DEPARTMENT: Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (EHS) Program Development and Consulting

Reports to: Supervisor Consulting Safety Officer
Annual review by the Supervisor

Level: CSO
Work Hours: Part Time and Full Time Positions Available

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB

Our CSOs provide environmental health & safety (EHS) program consultation and support services to Safety Partners' clients. Take responsibility for clients' EHS program development and implementation for general safety, chemical safety, biosafety and radiation safety, and/or perform specific EHS tasks as designated by the client boss.

MAIN JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • On-site client work, with the goal of supporting clients' EHS programs for workplace safety and for local, state and federal regulatory compliance. EHS program development and implementation for general safety, chemical safety, biosafety and radiation safety. Working with clients to implement policies and procedures for procurement, use and disposal of hazardous materials, including, but not limited to:
    • Manage, develop, implement radiation safety, biosafety, chemical safety programs - procurement, use, disposal.
    • Manage, develop, and implement General Safety Program - basic life safety: general fire safety, hazard awareness, emergency preparedness.
    • Carry over relevant elements of safety program throughout client site, including: animal facility, machine shop, engineering, warehouse, shipping & receiving, office/admin.
    • Coordinate and facilitate safety committee.
    • EHS permitting for procurement / storage / use / disposal of hazardous materials: flammables, rDNA, select agents, MWRA, controlled substances, DEP, EPA, radiation, etc. Environmental permitting may be done upon approval of the Director and President.
    • Coordinate hazardous waste segregation, collection, disposal. This may include waste pouring.
    • Review hazardous materials ordering, usage & storage to maintain compliance and safety.
    • Audit operations to confirm that EHS program components are being observed.
    • Training client staff to ensure regulatory compliance and to ensure staff and Safety Officers are integrated into the safety program.
    • Maintain central safety files.
    • Develop & deliver training for all safety programs relevant to client, including, but not limited to HazCom, Lab Stand, Chem Awareness, Biosafety, Radiation Safety.
    • Coordinate specialized training, such as RCRA, DOT, IATA, OSHA First Responder, CPR, First Aid, AED.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

REQUIREMENTS PREFERENCES
TRAINING/EDUCATION
  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • Experience in a laboratory setting
  • Knowledge of two or more: OSHA, DEP, EPA, DOT, DPH, MWRA, NIH, NFPA, DEA, CDC regulations as they pertain to life science or nanotechnology companies
  • Knowledge of RCRA hazardous waste regulation
  • OSHA emergency response, Operations Level or above.
  • 40 hour Radiation Safety Officer course
  • Principles and Practices of Biosafety or 4 courses targeting biological safety in research labs
  • Industrial Hygiene – 4 or more courses relevant to research laboratories
If preferred qualifications are not met at time of hire, the employee is expected to complete within a 2 year period upon employment with Safety Partners.

JOB EXPERIENCE

  • Biotechnology/pharmaceutical research science or academic science lab experience or medical technology science experience or EOHS related work experience
  • Experience training small to large groups
  • Research via the world-wide-web

SKILLS/COMPETENCIES

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Public Speaking
  • Strong communication and writing skills, including: reading comprehension, writing with accuracy, communicating with business savvy and interpersonal skills.
  • Independent thought and problem solving with little supervision
  • Supervising and mentoring 1 or more staff
  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • Able to pass a lung capacity test
